After first launching their FACES facial recognition system in Johor Senai Airport in 2018, AirAsia expanded the tool to Kuala Lumpur and Manila in November 2021. AirAsia has now integrated the newly enhanced system with Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad’s (Malaysia Airports) EZPaz technology at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (klia2), offering travellers an end-to-end contactless journey.

FACES is now available across key customer touchpoints. These include

  • mobile enrolment
  • check-in counter
  • pre-security check
  • boarding

These features will initially be available for selected domestic travel in the start up phase. If you have already enrolled for FACES via the airasia Super App, you can now travel seamlessly from arrival at the airport, departure gate to the flight, without having to present your boarding pass after self check-in.

The enhanced contactless feature went live on 3rd October 2022, when passengers departing on flight AK5234 from Kuala Lumpur to Kuching successfully passed through the pre-security and boarding with their biometric identity. In addition to the more seamless journey through the airport with contactless document checks and significantly less queuing time, FACES also increases operational efficiencies, safety and security for the airline.

As air travel bounces back post-covid, AirAsia considers it more important than ever to focus on implementing digital innovations to take the hassle out of air travel, providing a more seamless and efficient customer experience. The timing is also right for the facial recognition system to come on stream following the government’s recent decision to make face masks no longer mandatory at public places and in flight.

….. As a digital and contactless procedure, which includes online check-in anywhere, anytime in the world with a click of a button, FACES is a definitive game-changer and a revolutionary enhancement to help restore confidence in air travel. AirAsia Malaysia CEO, Riad Asmat

The new technology is available on selected flights from AirAsia’s main hub in klia2 with many opportunities to expand FACES at other touchpoints such as self bag drop at the airport, payment features on the airasia Super App and others across their airline and digital businesses.

Riad Asmat added that:

….We look forward to deploying our contactless FACES technologies in  every  airport we operate to in the near future to make flying more convenient, efficient and seamless than ever before.

AirAsia encourages all travellers to enrol for FACES on the airasia Super App. Enrolment can be also be easily done with a passport or a National identification card (MyKad) and a one-time verification process at dedicated airport counters W15 and W16 at klia2. You can also enrol for FACES at these counters. For more information and FAQs on FACES, please click here.
