Travellers to Japan will be spoilt for choice over the coming holiday period, with both Qantas and Jetstar operating flights from Melbourne to Tokyo’s Narita Airport over the December 2016 / February 2017 holiday peak travel period.
The new direct Tullamarine – Narita service Qantas service will be launched on 16th December 2016, subject to regulatory approval and will take over the route exclusively from 25th February 2017, when Jetstar will cease flights on the route. The Qantas Group’s dual-brand strategy and fleet size gives the airline a wider range of options to respond quickly to market demand, enabling them to assign the correct aircraft to a specific route.
The new route will be operated by a reconfigured and upgraded two-class A330-300 with 297 seats, an aircraft widely acclaimed as best in class for the business market. This aircraft is also used on the Melbourne – Singapore route.
Fares for Qantas’ new service are now available for sale for travel from 16th December 2016. Apart from 24th, 25th, and 31st December, the flights will operate daily.

Already have a Jetstar flight booked?
Existing customers booked on Qantas’ Sydney-Tokyo (Haneda) and Brisbane-Tokyo (Narita) services wishing to change their flight to the new Melbourne-Tokyo (Narita) direct service can contact Qantas customer care.
Jetstar customers who are booked on Melbourne-Tokyo (Narita) flights from 26th February, 2017 onwards will be re-accommodated on the new Qantas flights.
Jetstar will continue to operate direct international services from the Gold Coast and Cairns to Tokyo (Narita) and Cairns to Osaka.
