If you’re attending the Formula 1 Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix at Sepang International Circuit (SIC) this weekend (2nd to 4th October 2026), KL International Airport (KLIA) is advising visitors to use public transport, as a significant increase in traffic and vehicle movements is expected throughout the race weekend. Translation: even bigger jams than normal and nowhere to park. There will be limited parking At KLIA and it will also not come cheap, even if you can find it and you may still have to walk quite a way.
In a statement issued on Thursday 1st October, Malaysia Airports strongly advised race-goers not to drive to KLIA with the intention of parking there to travel to SIC, and to plan alternative arrangements. With more than 200,000 spectators expected at SIC over the three-day event, daily crowds anticipated to exceed 100,000. Parking at KLIA Terminal 1 and the KLIA Long Term Car Park is extremely limited and is expected to reach full capacity early each day.
How to get there
Plan your journey in advance and use the Express Rail Link (ERL) services, including KLIA Ekspres and KLIA Transit, as well as e-hailing services to arrive at KLIA Terminals 1 and 2. You can catch the ERL Express service at KL Sentral and reach KLIA T2 in just over half an hour. The KLIA Transit takes a few minutes more, but you can board at a number of stations on the way. We suggest you use the MRT service to Putrajaya and the ERL transit from there. It takes a bit longer, but is much less expensive.
Buses are also available from the city, but they will also get caught in any jams on the road.
Free transfers from Terminal 2 and others
For those attending the F1 event, free shuttle bus services to SIC will be available from KLIA Terminal 2, KLIA Long Term Car Park and Mitsui Outlet Park KLIA. This will be well signposted near the pick-up point.
Not going to the F1?
KLIA also reminded passengers travelling by air during the F1 weekend to allow additional travel time when making their journey to the airport, as heavy traffic is expected on major roads leading to KLIA. (or catch the train!). Road diversions may also delay you, as The Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) will be implementing traffic diversions from 8.00am to 11.00pm daily during the three-day event and road users are urged to use alternative routes where directed.
Passengers should check the latest traffic and travel advisories from KLIA, PDRM and SIC before travelling to the airport. The statement assured travellers that KLIA will continue to work closely with the relevant authorities and stakeholders to facilitate traffic flow and prioritise the smooth movement of passengers during the race weekend.
