It was a normal Tuesday morning for most of the passengers on AirAsia’s AK5104, Kuala Lumpur-Kota Kinabalu on 7th November. At least until they had a hint about what was to come, during the pre-flight announcement. With representatives of tonton, Malaysia’s #1 OTT (over-the-top) platform on board, they were in for a treat.

The usual quiet in-flight experience to Kota Kinabalu became a fun-filled party, led by the AirAsia Fun Team (aka, the Crew) to launch the latest in-flight experience. Malaysian fans had already recognised the ‘faces of tonton’, singer Ayda Jebat and actor Redza Rosli.  Baki Zainal and Rickman Chia, hosts of the 8TV’s Let’s Cycle lifestyle programme, were also stopped on their way to the flight by fans wanting ‘wefies’. They didn’t disappoint, playing games and giving out prizes to enthusiastic passengers.

How does tonton work?

tonton is Malaysia’s first and largest homegrown streaming service. They’ve now joined forces with ROKKI, AirAsia’s in-flight Wi-Fi service provider, to create a unique in-flight streaming experience.

  • Wifi must be enabled on your aircraft. Fifty AirAsia A320 aircraft already have the facility.
  • The service is only available for domestic services.
  • tonton’s streaming service is free.
  • Use your own personal mobile device – Android or iPhone. It isn’t available for Windows or tablets yet.
  • Service is available once the aircraft reaches 10,000 ft. It ceases when it descends below this during landing.

What can I watch?

Make sure you have plenty of juice in your device battery, so you can binge watch your favourite tonton shows. They have a selection of films, dramas, lifestyle, documentary and children’s programmes available, including the kids’ favourite Ejen Ali.

Ejen Ali was present at a short on-ground press conference after landing, with the personalities who accompanied the flight. Ben Jern Loh General Manager of tonton and Hassan Peter Choudhury, Group Head of Ancillary of AirAsia signed commemorative plaques and each said a few words.

…. We are totally thrilled for the opportunity to join forces with ROKKI AirAsia which completely changes the definition of in-flight viewing. Ben Loh

AirAsia’s Group Head of Ancillary echoed his comments :

… We are pleased to collaborate with tonton and are very excited to share the enhancements we have made to the ROKKI platform. Hassan Peter Choudhury

He further commented that guests onboard ROKKI flights can enjoy free access to ROKKI entertainment and the e-commerce platform, featuring movies, music, articles and games as well as shopping.

He also reminded passengers who can’t live without the Internet, that they can stay connected to their favorite chat and Internet apps with a ROKKI plan, available from MYR9. In addition, AirAsia also provides an online shopping experience to its passengers giving them in-flight exclusive deals from ROKKI Shop.

We tested both the free tonton streamed services and the paid for Rokki services during the flight. Watch for our Guide, coming soon.
