Malaysia Airlines adds direct flights from Penang to Kuching and Kota Kinabalu from December 2021 to March 2022, as demand for domestic travel increases following the relaxation of interstate travel bans and the upcoming year-end holidays.

Direct flights from Penang

The airline’s sister company, Firefly will service these routes from April 2022 onwards, on the resumption of its Penang based jet operations. These were suspended since April 2021 due to the prolonged movement control orders which resulted in poor demand. The resumption complements Malaysia Airlines in serving the leisure market while diversifying Firefly’s base connecting secondary cities in Malaysia to East Malaysia.

The inaugural flight MH2721 from Penang arrived in Kuching International Airport on 2nd December, welcomed with a water canon salute, followed by cultural performances at the terminal. Officials from Sarawak’s Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture and representatives from MASwings handed out souvenirs to passengers upon disembarkation.

Firefly will resume its jet operations to serve these key domestic sectors in the near future. With the resumption of Firefly’s jet operations, customers will enjoy a flexible service concept. This is designed with product unbundling to suit both leisure focused and price-sensitive customers, offering more value.
MASwings operates Rural Air Services in East Malaysia under its parent Malaysia Airlines. The airline has increased its operations from Kuching to Miri to 12 times weekly and 7 weekly flights from Kota Kinabalu to Miri from 1st December 2021. This considerably improves air connectivity to the rural areas of Borneo.
