Sihanoukville sits on the Gulf of Thailand, south west of Phnom Penh, about four hours by road, or a slow train ride away. The city, the country’s fourth largest, is named in honour of Cambodia’s revered former King Sihanouk.

What to see and do?

The main attraction is the sea and sun. Travellers will enjoy a trip to the unspoiled tropical island of Koh Rong Samloem, famous for its beautiful sandy beaches, jungle mountains, mangrove and marine life. For those who like a lively nightlife, head for Ochheuteal Beach, with its late night scene with restaurants and bars.

If you like things a bit quieter and want to do some exploring, why not take a day trip (or two) up to Phnom Penh? Visit the beach at Kep and sample the seafood, or head for the hills. Nearby Bokor Mountain is a great place to see old and new and enjoy the cool weather. The Kbal Chhay Waterfalls are another popular spot for both local and foreign visitors.

Foodies aren’t forgotten. Fresh seafood is a specialty of Sihanoukville and the surrounding areas. Look out for the famous sear-grilled squid in any of the small seaside towns like Kep, to the north of the city. There’s a beachside market where you can choose your preference straight from the basket or net.  Choose one of the stallholders waiting, to have it cooked straight away.
