Why Hanoi?
Hanoi, capital of Vietnam, has a history of a thousand years and counting. The country’s rich Vietnamese cultural history has strong influences from Chinese and French occupation, seen in buildings and food. The city boasts a bustling yet laid back atmosphere with attractions easily explored on foot, especially if you elect to stay in the area of the 36 streets. Central is the Hoan Kiem Lake, with its famous red bridge leading to the Ngoc Son Temple at the northern shore of the lake.
If you want to get out of the city, you can take to the hills. Picturesque Sapa to the north shows off rice terraces and lush greenery. The areas popular for mountain trail walking or cycling expeditions to meet the hill tribes of Vietnam such as the H’mongs, Daos and Muongs. In addition to Sapa, other parts of northern Vietnam such as Son La and Bac Ha can encourage you to stay longer.
Don’t miss an overnight (or two) trip to the beautiful Halong Bay with over 3,000 limestone islets, caves and grottos and fishing villages. This UNESCO listes site is to the east of Hanoi.
How about Phuket?
Phuket is well known for its nightlife around Soi Bangla and the beautiful beaches in Patong. However There’s a lot more to Phuket than these. There are many other beaches spread out across Phuket and a day spent island hopping is both relaxing and fun. Around the islands of Phang Nga Bay, you can kayak into hidden lagoons within limestone cliffs or take tour of James Bond Island and the village-on-stilts Koh Panyee.
Take the winding road leads to the top of Nakkerd Hill, where the 45-metre concrete Big Buddha marble statue looks over the island. If not for the spiritual merit, come for the superb panoramic views. This is but one of many temples and mosques on the island. This gives you a clue to the variety of food available – a cosmopolitan blend to warm any foodie’s heart.
History buffs aren’t forgotten. Visit Old Phuket Town for a walking tour of restored, century-old shop houses reminiscent of the former tin mining town’s ties to the British colonial sea port of Penang.
