The long awaited FAA clearance for AirAsia X to fly to the United States has been approved, allowing AirAsia X to offer scheduled flights to any destination within the US. AirAsia X’s clearance by the Federal Aviation Authority (FAA) is the first granted to any Asian low-cost carrier and is seen as a major milestone for AirAsia X.

AirAsia X Group CEO, Datuk Kamarudin Meranun, is a statement to announce the approval, indicated that the airline is currently considering flights to several US states including Hawaii as part of its route expansion plans. Apart from concurrent negotiations to secure the necessary approvals to resume their popular London flights, he said:

…. Our expansion up until now has concentrated on Asia, Australasia and the Middle East, and we are excited about our first foray into an entirely new market as we look beyond Asia Pacific.

He also paid tribute to the late Group Chief Operating Officer, Anaz Ahmad Tajuddin and his staff for their efforts in gaining the approval….

…. We wouldn’t be where we are today if he had not laid the foundations with his blood, sweat and tears, and his bravery in the face of cancer showed us the true meaning of strength. This is for you, Anaz. Group CEO, Kamarudin Meranun

While no firm destinations or dates have, as yet, been announced, indications are that Hawaii will be one of the first to take off. By making use of the Fly-Thru facility in Kuala Lumpur, passengers from other destinations within Asean and Asia Pacific will be able to use access the US routes more easily.

Fly-Thru enables passengers with connecting flights through Kuala Lumpur to pass through immigration with their baggage checked through to the final destination without having to do another check-in. For more information on how you can spend your time during the wait, check out our story on the AirAsia Premium Red Lounge, which is complimentary for AirAsia Premium passengers, and available by ‘pay per entry’ for other travellers.
