The Malaysian Immigration Department has extended its auto gate access for entry clearance to visitors from 53 additional countries, according to Deputy Home Minister Shamsul Anuar Nasarah. This expansion includes 26 European Union countries, 17 non-EU European nations, six Arab countries, as well as four others, Canada, Hong Kong, China, and Taiwan. In total,

Responding to a parliamentary query, Shamsul Anuar highlighted that the facility aims to streamline entry processes for foreign tourists while maintaining security. He noted that 1,568 automatic passport scanning machines are currently operational across Malaysia’s entry points.

Which airports currently offer auto gate access?

Malaysia has six major international airports offering auto gate access:

  • Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KUL)
  • Kuching International Airport (KCH)
  • Kota Kinabalu International Airport (BKI)
  • Penang International Airport (PEN)
  • Langkawi International Airport (LGK)
  • Johor Bahru Senai International Airport (JHB)

There are also Immigration counters at several smaller airports with limited international services although not all offer auto gate access.

To further enhance immigration efficiency, the government is considering implementing quick response (QR)  code technology at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA). This system would enable travellers to scan a code containing their personal and travel details, expediting the screening process and reducing congestion, especially during peak hours. Plans are in place to expand the QR code system to other international airports and border checkpoints.

The integrated system is expected to improve immigration management, enhance security, and minimize corruption risks. The QR code initiative, set to launch next year, will also extend to Johor’s Sultan Iskandar Building (BSI) and Sultan Abu Bakar Complex (KSAB) for travel between Malaysia and Singapore.

These measures reflect the government’s commitment to modernizing immigration services and accommodating growing tourist numbers.
