AirAsia continues its focus on India with the resumption of flights to the culturally-rich Bhubaneswar, capital of Odisha, with thrice weekly flights commencing 28th May 2024. The airline currently offers flights directly from Kuala Lumpur to 13 cities in all of India with 78 flights weekly to Trivandrum, Chennai, Tiruchirappalli, Kochi, Hyderabad, Bengaluru and Kolkata already in place. Four new services will begin in the next three months, Jaipur (flights to commence on 21st April), Visakhapatnam (flights from 26th April), Ahmedabad (starting 1st May) and now Bhubaneswar at the end of May. Medium haul affiliate airline AirAsia X Malaysia (flight code D7) also flies directly from Kuala Lumpur to New Delhi and Amritsar with 8 flights weekly. AirAsia is the only airline in Malaysia to fly to Bhubaneswar Jaipur and Visakhapatnam.
Why focus on India?
The Malaysian Government’s decision to offer visa-free entry for Indian citizens visiting Malaysia late last year, has seen a surge in visitors from the sub-continent to Malaysia. This comes on top of the more than five million guests to fly between India, Malaysia and beyond in the last six years and the addition of the new cities will help this growth. This is also encouraging with Tourism Malaysia ‘Visit Malaysia Year 2026’ (VMY2026) just around the corner.
