In an announcement made on 17th August, the airline said the move was to keep air travel affordable for all. The processing fees, charged for administrative costs, will be fully absorbed by AirAsia from 1st October.
In making the announcement, AirAsia Group President (Airlines) Bo Lingam noted that as AirAsia is synonymous with affordable air travel. In adding that they will stay true to their promise – ‘now everyone can fly’ he added
…. We feel this is especially relevant now with higher passenger service charges (PSC) at klia2. We want to cut travel costs so our guests don’t suffer, and we believe every little helps. Bo Lingam
The passenger service charge is due to be implemented in September 2019 and will add to the cost of air travel from Malaysian airports. Representations have been made to the government to either reduce or delay the implementation of the charges which may affect Visit Malaysia 2020.
Referring to Visit Malaysia 2020, Bo Lingam added:
…. We want to make that an incredible success. This will be great for the tourism industry as well as the Malaysian economy, and it’s one of the ways we want to give back to the country.
