Are you keen on mountain biking? Tasmania is a perfect place for mountain biking – riders enjoy the varied terrain and friendly weather. Enthusiasts should mark the weekend of 8th & 9th April 2017 for the Shimano Enduro Tasmania, Round 2 of this year’s Enduro World Series. Two new tracks have been added to the the trails recently.
The small town of Derby in north eastern Tasmania is small enough that if don’t have a reason to stop, you’ll be through it in about a minute. We passed through on a rainy March afternoon at the right time for a coffee break so when we saw a sign saying ‘coffee’, we stopped. We pulled over into the Tin Dragon Interpretation Centre and cafe, which shares the parking space of the Blue Derby mountain bike trails.
Since the bike trails were opened in 2015, the town has welcomed an extra twenty-five thousand visitors. This has resulted in an upsurge in the amount of available accommodation, to cope with this year round traffic, although the town is an easy drive from larger centres east or west.
What else is there in Derby but mountain biking?
If you’re not a rider, there are lots of nearby attractions – the beautiful coastline and Wineglass Bay, or lavender farms back towards Launceston. The Tin Dragon Interpretation Centre cafe and museum were unfortunately already closed when we visited, but the grounds were open and we had a walk around. The area used to be a centre for tin mining and there is a memorial to those who lost their lived in a dam burst that flooded the mine in 1929.
A walk around town won’t take long, but there are some worthy heritage buildings to see.
