Fancy spending nearly nineteen hours in a confined space? Or just want to get to your destination the fastest way possible? You’ll be able to do just this, come October 2018, when Singapore Airlines (SIA) takes off on the world’s first and longest commercial flight. SIA’s inaugural longest flight leaves Singapore on 11th October for Newark Liberty International Airport.

The longest flight

Non-stop services between Singapore and New York will initially operate three times weekly, using the new Airbus A350-900ULR. The first A350-900ULR is due for delivery in September. This ultra-long-range variant of the A350-900 will set off on Monday, Thursday and Saturday from Singapore. Daily operations will commence on 18th October after an additional A350-900ULR aircraft enters service.

Comfort

This is a long flight to be cooped up in one place, so the aircraft will be configured in a two-class layout, with 67 Business Class and 94 Premium Economy seats.

The A350-900ULR aircraft will offer a more comfortable travelling experience with features such as

  • higher ceilings
  • larger windows
  • an extra wide body
  • lighting designed to reduce jetlag.

The carbon composite airframe is designed to allow for improved air quality, thanks to a more optimised cabin altitude and humidity levels.

Tickets are available for sale online and through your preferred travel agent.

How far is it?

It’s approximately 9,000 nautical miles (16,700km) flight distance, with travelling time up to 18hrs 45min. Singapore Airlines served the Singapore-Newark route until 2013 using Airbus A340-500s. However, services were suspended after the aircraft were returned to Airbus.

Singapore airlines is the launch customer for the new A350-900ULR. They have seven of this Airbus A350-900 variant on order, all due for delivery by the end of the yearThe airline currently has 21 A350-900s in its fleet, with 46 more on order.

Singapore Airlines currently serves New York JFK, daily via Frankfurt.
