The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) has at long last granted final approval to the proposed alliance between Qantas and Emirates. It’s been a long road, with excitement building through draft determinations, interim authorisations and now final approval.

All the while, there have been no real surprises – except maybe for the odd snarky submission. It also remains to be seen whether there will any impact on launch plans based on an unexpected approval date, 18 April 2013 – it’s a little detail hidden on page 140 of the authorisation.

Conditions remain in place regarding capacity to New Zealand (requiring both airlines to maintain capacity), but from a cursory reading there’s nothing else that might come as a surprise. Overall, excellent news for economy travellers!
