Kuala Lumpur – Bhubaneswar is the latest entry to India joining the AirAsia network. The four times weekly flights are due to take off on 26th April 2017, making this AirAsia’s 14th route into India. With a departure time of just after 10pm from Kuala Lumpur, the two and a half hour time difference between the two locations means a same evening arrival before midnight. From Bhubaneswar, flights are timed to leave just before midnight, to see passengers landing in Kuala Lumpur’s KLIA2 in good time for breakfast.

The ancient city of Bhubaneswar in Eastern India is the capital of India’s Odisha state (originally known as Orissa) and boasts a history dating back over three thousand years.

What to see?

Also known as the ‘Temple City of India’, Bhubaneswar has a population of over two million people. It has a rich history of over 3,000 years and it is now a rapidly growing city with commercial districts and hotels, shops and restaurants which complement the tourism industry.

If you’re there to see historical Bhubaneswar, visit:

  • the ancient Lingaraj Temple, built in the 11th century as “the truest fusion of dream and reality”
  • the  Khandagiri and Udayagiri Caves which date back to the 2nd century BC
  • the Tribal Museum of Bhubaneswar with its rich collection of artefacts, crafts and art objects belonging to different tribes and
  • the Raj Bhavan garden, an important landmark of the modern capital city of Odisha.

If a sun and sea holiday is your preference, head off for the beaches at Puri and Gopalpur.

What to bring home?

For shopping and souvenirs, look out for:

  • local products such as Chandua, a typical Orissa handiwork
  • traditional paintings
  • metal ware and silver jewellery
  • Sambalpuri silk and cotton.
