A short history of the route
Direct scheduled services to Kuala Lumpur from Amsterdam began in 1958. Departing Amsterdam on 25 April, 1958 a small Dutch business delegation arrived in Kuala Lumpur a week later. Passengers and crew flew the Lockheed Super Constellation “Griffioen” with registration PH-LKG on the inaugural Kuala Lumpur-Amsterdam route. Many Dutch businesses had set up in Malaysia at the time, so the boost to trade and export between Malaysia and the Netherlands was warmly welcomed.
It’s worth noting that KLM first arrived on Malaysian shores in 1924, long before the first scheduled flights in 1958. On 1 October, 1924, KLM began its first intercontinental flight from Amsterdam to Jakarta. A KLM Fokker F7-II, very modern for its time and one of the first passenger planes with an enclosed cabin, was meant to take 22 days. However it landed in Jakarta on 24 November, 1924, with no fewer than 21 stops. One of these stops was in Alor Setar, in the northern state of Kedah!
