Have you enjoyed Pak Nassar’s nasi lemak at 30,000ft during an AirAsia flight? Ever wished you could eat it on the ground? Now you can eat this popular Santan meal at the new Santan Restaurant. At a launch event of 2nd December 2019, AirAsia Group CEO Tony Fernandes explained the move into the food business. Since taking an 80% stake in their food supplier T&Co Coffee Sdn Bhd in 2016, the company has grown into more than ‘just’ an airline. They are using IT extensively to link many lifestyle options and this new vesture is another prong.
The fast-food restaurant and cafe has its flagship home at F-051, First Floor, in the Centre Court of Mid Valley Megamall, Kuala Lumpur. If you’re worried about the traffic, the mall is now easily accessible from KTM (Port Klang and Seremban lines) and the Putra Heights LRT service. The restaurant opens to the public on 3rd December 2019.
Santan Restaurant and T&Co
In response to queries, the Group CEO and Santan Restaurant and T&CO Cafe’ General Manager Catherine Goh shared future plans and philosophy. This is the first Asean fast food restaurant in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, offering a range of Asean cuisines and coffee at affordable prices. The plans also include some ‘healthy’ options as well as the favourites already on the menu.
Cost efficiency and supplier support
A number of initiatives are employed to achieve these aims. The outlet features a smart menu equipped with Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning. This can recommend popular dishes based on time, past ordering patterns and demographic taste. If you prefer to use the familiar counter ordering, this is also available. To keep food prices low, while being fair to suppliers, the company is dealing directly with the producers. Tony Fernandes shared how he had been meeting with rice growers, farmers and fishermen directly. This ensures that the producers get a fair price for their products, while removing middleman costs.
Expansion
A number of other Santan Restaurants are also in the planning stages in various locations. Future plans include restaurants/cafes in other overseas locations as well as within ASEAN countries. Australia is also firmly in the plans.
Packaging
All packaging and cutlery are eco-friendly and bio-degradable.
Pricing
The restaurant offers popular Asean favourites for MYR12, so foodies can now enjoy Pak Nasser’s Nasi Lemak and Uncle Chin’s Chicken Rice on-ground as well as in the air.
Other dishes inspired by popular Asean cuisines include Pineapple Fish Noodle from Cambodia and Chicken Inasal with Garlic Rice from Philippines. T&CO cafe has a range of Asean-sourced coffee and tea, snacks and desserts with local flavours. These include a Nasi Lemak Quinoa Wrap and Onde-Onde Cake.
….. The opening of this flagship restaurant is the beginning of something great for the Santan and T&CO brands. We have seen a significant appetite for our in-flight menu offerings beyond our flights across the region and this is our answer to that demand. Catherine Goh, Santan Restaurant and T&CO Cafe GM
She reiterated the company’s support for local and Asean producers and suppliers. The expansion will also create new job opportunities with affordable franchising. They aim to have five owned Santan restaurants by the end of 2020 and 100 franchisee-operated restaurants and cafes within the next three to five years across global markets.
