Melaka and Penang

Airasia links historical cities Melaka and Penang with a direct daily flight, effective 1st July 2019. This new service is expected to help achieve the State’s target of 20 million visitors in 2019. Visitors flying in to Penang’s international airport for a holiday, can now easily take a side trip to Malaysia’s second UNESCO heritage city.  UPDATE: This service is not currently available since Covid-19 closures. Hopefully it will return soon.

Historical cities Melaka and Penang

Melaka is one of Malaysia’s most popular holiday destinations, especially after its listing as a UNESCO heritage site in 2008. Popular attractions including colonial buildings A’Famosa Fort, St Paul’s Hill, Stadthuys, and Christ Church are all within walking distance of each other and across the river from the main part of the city.

Melaka’s history which goes back more than six hundred years is a cultural mix of input from Chinese, Portuguese, Dutch and British eras. Don’t feel like walking? Hire a trishaw for a relaxing tour in the heritage city or enjoy a boat ride or stroll along Melaka River. Don’t forget to keep your eyes open for beautiful murals painted on the historical street houses.

Foodie Alert!

Like Penang, foodies are spoilt for choice as the cultural mix of the population extends to the food.

Check out

  • Traditional Nyonya delicacies
  • Satay Celup – skewered meat, seafood or vegetables dipped in a boiling pot of satay gravy
  • Putu Piring – steamed rice flour cake with Gula Melaka filling
  • Asam Pedas – sour and spicy fish-stewed dish
  • Chicken rice balls

There’s lots more as well, but all are finished off well with a bowl of cendol or a coconut shake, both perfect in the hot weather.
