Did you know that it’s estimated there are only about 1600 pandas left living in the wild today?

To draw attention to this fact, acclaimed French artist Paulo Grangeon has made 1600 papier mache pandas which have been travelling the world since 2008 in collaboration with WWF and have since appeared in more than 100 exhibitions across a number of countries including France, the Netherlands, Italy, Germany, Switzerland, Taiwan and Hong Kong. Malaysia is the third stop after Hong Kong in the Asian region. They have been already been spotted having a picnic in Dataran Merdeka, Kuala Lumpur and interacting with the locals in the historical zone in Georgetown, Penang.

Funds raised throughout the “1600 Pandas Malaysia Tour” will be channeled to support WWF-Malaysia’s conservation efforts.

AirAsia welcomed the 1600 Pandas on their journey around the world during their stop in Malaysia to spread the message of environmental conservation and sustainable development. During their “1600 Pandas Malaysia Tour”, the pandas will visit more than 15 iconic landmarks across the country between 21st December 2014 and 25th January 2015, with the theme of “Initiating the Culture of Creative Conservation”.

Spencer Lee, Head of Commercial for AirAsia Berhad said, “We are very happy to welcome the 1600 Pandas to Malaysia. As the airline with the largest route network in this region, which also includes the panda’s home – China, we are glad to support this campaign to raise awareness about panda conservation in Malaysia. We look forward to seeing the pandas across Malaysia for the next month.”
