Even if you’re not a die-hard GoT fan, the incredible beauty, architectural wonders and historical importance of each these destinations are sure to provide inspiration for an upcoming getaway.
Spain
Since a GoT crew was spotted filming in the medieval town of Gerona at the end of the northern summer 2015, fans have been tipping this as the setting for Braavos’ Old Town, with one of the hot spots being the grand Gerona Cathedral.
Similarly, the medieval fortress in Canet del Mar north of Barcelona, has been identified as the setting of House Tarly and film crews were also spotted around the 13th Century Montgrí Castle and the medieval town of Besalú, easily accessible from Gerona or Barcelona.
The semi-desert plains in Navarre, Peniscola in the province of Castellon and North Dornish Tower of Joy, Zafra Castle in the northeast of Spain overlooking the Campillo de Dueñas, famous for their semi-desert landscapes and harsh winters are also on the list, as is the Moorish fortress of Alcazaba in Almeria.
Northern Ireland
The softer landscapes on Northern Ireland are seen again in views of the picturesque fishing village of Ballintoy in county Antrim set as the fictional home of House of Greyjoy in the Iron Islands.
Croatia
Travellers who visit UNESCO Hertiage listed Dubrovnik on the Adriatic Coast of Croatia will appreciate why this beautiful old walled city has returned to Game of Thrones 6th season. Remarkably well preserved despite damage caused by an earthquake in the 17th Century and armed conflict in the 1990s,Dubrovnik is the setting for Westeros’ main city.
Hverfjall, Iceland
The dramatic scenery of Iceland ranging from ice and snow to the Hverfjall Volcano provide the backdrop for the chilling scenes featuring the White Walkers in the mysterious land Beyond the Wall.
Finding a flight
For those looking to grab a bargain now winter is coming, Spain, Croatia and Malta have the lowest average return airfares from across Australia at $1,625, $1,737 and $1,770 respectively.
