Smoother terminal kerbside traffic flow at KLIA with new system

June 3, 20262 minute read

We recently picked up a traveller at Kuala Lumpur International Airport and found it to be entirely stress free, we were in and out in under 3 minutes, instead of a long wait in the old ‘free for all’ chaos. Following the successful implementation of the Vehicle Access Management System (VAMS) at Terminal 1 (KLIA T1) on 1st December 2025, the system was activated at Terminal 2 (KLIA T2) on 31st March 2026, with kerbside traffic flow showing significant improvement, delivering a smoother and more efficient passenger drop-off and pick-up experience. Throughout the April and May 2026 grace period, users recorded an average ‘dwell time’ of slightly over three minutes, well within the complimentary 10-minute grace period with 99% compliance out of 127,986 vehicles at T2 , reflecting strong public acceptance and improved kerbside discipline.

VAMS Kerbside traffic flow: What is it?

Since its implementation at T1 and T2, VAMS has handled more than 7.3 million vehicles to date, contributing to more efficient kerbside traffic management. VAMS is designed to optimise traffic flow at KLIA’s high-demand kerbside zones, with vehicles expected to complete pick-ups and drop-offs within 10 minutes. The system also includes safeguards to manage congestion and operational delays. Traffic marshals and response teams are available across the kerbside area to provide quick assistance, while manual barrier operations and backup power systems help ensure traffic continues moving smoothly when required.

…. VAMS is part of our broader service commitment to continuously enhance the end-to-end airport experience for passengers and drivers at KLIA. Beyond improving traffic flow and kerbside efficiency, the system contributes to a smoother, more orderly, and service-driven airport environment from the first touchpoint of the passenger journey.Mohd Izani Ghani, Managing Director of Malaysia Airports

He added that Malaysia Airports will continue to refine and strengthen VAMS, as part of its commitment to deliver a smoother, more reliable and passenger-centric airport experience. The successful implementation has ensured that Malaysia Airports will explore the implementation of VAMS at other airports across their network.
