The new Segambut Utara Railway Station (North Segambut Railway Station) was launched recently by Malaysia’s of Minister of Transport and is expected to provide direct benefits to a catchment area of nearly 90,000 people, covering the Segambut, Kepong, Jinjang and Mont Kiara areas, with a projected population increase of over 100,000 people in the future. Segambut Utara Railway Station is strategically located between Segambut Station and Kepong Station and was selected based on the needs of local population movement, daily travel patterns and the potential for development growth in the surrounding area. The new station is capable of handling up to 8,000 passengers per hour in each direction during peak hours, with an estimated handling of almost 580,000 passengers per year, with significant implications from the reducing use of private vehicles on the road and increasing level of reliability and attraction of the public transport system.
Significance of Segambut Utara Station
Segambut Utara Station has been built with a commitment to ensure that senior citizens, people with disabilities, families with young children and low-income workers can enjoy safe, easily accessible and equitable public facilities designed with an emphasis on comfort, safety and inclusive accessibility. Among the facilities provided are vehicle parking, lifts, escalators, covered walkways and disabled-friendly facilities such as tactile tiles and barrier-free access.
To encourage the use of Park and Ride along with public transport among the community, Railway Assets Corporation (RAC) as owner and manager of national rail assets, will provide free parking facilities for three (3) months in conjunction with the opening of the Segambut North Railway Station. This measure will improve user accessibility and encourage a shift to a more sustainable mode of transport. This is also important because good public transport does not only depend on punctual train services, but also encompasses the user experience in its entirety, from home to station, from station to destination, and safety aspects along the way.
With a growing Kuala Lumpur facing a possible influx of more than a million vehicles every day, the emphasis on public transport is expected to help cut reliance on private vehicles which cause traffic congestion, contribute to air pollution, raising fuel costs and emotional stress for road users.
The Minister stressed the Government’s commitment to strengthening a sustainable public transport system and reducing dependence on private vehicle as every passenger who switches to public transport has a positive impact on reducing carbon emissions, reducing the risk of road accidents and improving the quality of life in urban areas. This makes investment in intercity rail development an investment in the well-being of the people and environmental sustainability. The integration with bus, taxi and e-hailing services, Segambut Utara Station functions as a micro-mobility hub that allows for a smoother, easier and more practical transition to travel modes.
…. I hope that this station will be a catalyst for a change in the local community’s travel patterns towards the use of public transport, thus contributing to the formation of a more livable, sustainable and prosperous Kuala Lumpur city.Loke Siew Fook, Minister of Transport, Malaysia
