European low-cost operator Norwegian kicked off its inaugural London to Singapore flights this week. Norwegian is not a new player in the region, having served Bangkok from Copenhagen, Sweden and Stockholm for some time. However the new UK route introduces a low-cost option on a route that is consistently expensive, in spite of heavy competition.
World’s longest low-cost route
Norwegian’s Singapore-London flight is also now the world’s longest low-cost long-haul route. At 6,764 miles (or 10,885 km), the flight from London takes approximately 12 hours and 45 minutes. It is flown with Norwegian’s Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft, configured with 309 economy seats in a 3-3-3 layout. This aircraft also features 35 premium seats in a 2-3-2 layout.
Ground arrangements
On the London end, Norwegian operates from the South Terminal of London Gatwick Airport. Although Gatwick is further from London than Heathrow Airport, it is served by the Gatwick Express and other commuter trains. It’s also worth noting that the new ‘Worldwide by easyJet’ platform will aid with connections here. It’s possible to book a short-haul flight on easyJet, connecting to Singapore in a single booking.
In Singapore, Norwegian pulls up at Changi Airport Terminal 1. From here, transit passengers can connect to Terminals 2 and 3 by Skytrain, and Terminal 4 by bus.
