Enhanced security checks for Middle East flights bound for Australia

April 6, 20172 minute read
Kuala Lumpur - Doha direct, Penang direct from Doha

Enhanced security checks are now in place for all Australia-bound flights departing Doha, Abu Dhabi and Dubai. This directive comes following changes to security measures by the UK and US governments. The new measures will involve explosive detection screening for randomly selected passengers and their baggage. The checks resemble those currently made prior to boarding domestic flights within Australia. They may also include screening of electronic devices, so be prepared to turn on your devices to prove that they’re real. Authorities indicate that there are no plans to prohibit electronic devices on flights to Australia “at this stage”.

Are you affected?

The checks affect all flights from Doha, Abu Dhabi and Dubai destined for Australia. Affected airlines include Emirates, Qatar Airways, Etihad and Qantas. Virgin Australia flight from Abu Dhabi are codeshares with Etihad, these will also be affected. If you are flying direct to Australia from any of these airports be prepared for new procedures at the departure gate.

Authorities insist that these enhanced measures are precautionary and are not in response to a specific threat. While they are in no way as disruptive as the UK and US measures, we urge affected travellers to allow more time at the gate.
