We recently visited Kuala Terengganu for the annual ‘Candat Sotong’ Festival and spent three nights in the Pantai Primula Hotel, conveniently located right on the beachfront. There’s a large and reportedly well tenanted Mall and easy walk along the beachfront path, but we were so busy, we didn’t have a minute to check it out. The beach is a great spot for an early morning walk and there are nets for a game of beach soccer if you’re so inclined.

Overview
This is a nineties era hotel with rooms over 12 floors. The two arms offering city or sea were so positioned that our city facing room on the northern side, had both so we could enjoy the sunrise each morning.
The hotel is not new, but has been a popular stay since the 1990s and is a well maintained example of a good hotel from that era.

Rooms
We had a double bedded room on the 11th Floor, which is a ‘Premium Floor’. The lift lobby opens out to glass windows overlooking the beach and there’s seating while you wait for the lift. Our room was clean, offering two pillows per person(firm and soft), a decent sized luggage bench and an wardrobe fitted with a shoe shelf, ample hangers and a light that switched on when the door was opened. An iron and ironing board were provided, with tea & coffee and a small fridge. The fridge had no mini-bar supplies. The air-conditioning is a centralised system and we were unable to adjust the temperature, so were very glad to have the warm blankets.

Free High Speed Internet (WiFi) is provided in-room and throughout the area. The speed was consistent throughout our stay, including the middle of the night. The room was well provided with wall sockets, one of which was a multi-socket and with our own extension, was more than enough for both of us.

Food
The Pantai Primula has a cafe/restaurant on the Lobby level floor where we enjoyed a buffet breakfast daily. The range of food on offer was more than enough to cater to most tastes, whether you were looking for a local or European breakfast, cereal, salad or yoghurt, although they did not offer an egg station. The coffee machine was a popular spot as was the toaster, which we used to crisp up our mini croissants to enjoy with our coffee. We were happy with the variety although noodles, rendang chicken and scrambled egg may seem a strange combination.
There was also a small selection of fresh fruits and local cakes and we liked that they offered different popular rice dishes other than the usual nasi lemak. The hotel does offer room service until midnight, you can scan the code in your room for the menu and order using WhatsApp.
We had a packed lunch given to us to eat in our room on Friday. This is because all restaurants and food outlets are required to close during Friday Prayer times.

Other facilities
A small souvenir stand, a spa and hairdresser have homes on Level One, and there’s a reading room in a mezzanine as you walk you towards the lobby, where there’s another larger shop. You can find tour packages offered by local operators on the standees just inside the main doors near Reception.
There is another food outlet offering hawker style food, in the garden by the beach, in the evenings. The garden area is very pleasant, and the older casuarinas are currently being replaced with young saplings. There’s no lap pool, but the general pool is clean and suitable for families. Towels are available when the pool is open and there are walled showers to rinse off before and after your dip.

Conclusions
We enjoyed our stay. It is an attractive hotel, comfortable and clean and being on the beach made it perfect for an early morning walk. While we generally liked the bathroom, which has been retiled and given an updated toilet set, we were in two minds about the bathtub, although it would be perfect for someone wanting to soak, the rain shower was difficult to control without getting your hair wet. Everything was clean, though the common tropical problem of mould was apparent in some places and some grouting needs to be changed.
