AirAsia strengthens Penang and Shenzhen link with direct flights

Penang Global Tourism (PGT) has partnered with AirAsia to launch a Penang/Shenzhen direct service, with the inaugural flight landing in Shenzhen on 28th October 2024. This new service is a major step forward in improving connections between Malaysia and China, encouraging cultural, economic, and tourism exchanges.

To celebrate the first flight, a welcoming ceremony took place on 29th October 2024 when it landed at 9:00 AM at Penang International Airport. Attending the event was YB Wong Hong Wai, Chairman of the Penang State Tourism and Creative Economy Committee, who joined AirAsia staff, tourism stakeholders, and media representatives.Penang/Shenzhen direct

Promotional Fares Penang/Shenzhen direct

Promotional fares for the Penang-Shenzhen route start at RM289 one way. Travellers can book their flights through the AirAsia MOVE app or on airasia.com from now until 3rd November 2024 for travel up until 30th June 2025. *All-in fares are quoted for one way travel only, inclusive of airport taxes, MAVCOM fee, fuel surcharges, and other applicable fees. T&C apply.

The Penang-Shenzhen route will operate four times a week, offering travellers greater convenience. Penang, known for its rich cultural heritage, delicious cuisine and historical sites, expects to see an increase in tourists from Shenzhen, one of China’s major economic centres.

YB Wong Hong Wai shared his excitement about the new route:

…. This direct connection between Penang and Shenzhen opens up fantastic opportunities for both cities, not just in tourism but also for cultural and business exchanges. Penang has always been a melting pot of cultures, and this new flight will strengthen its position as a leading international destination. We are eager to welcome more visitors from China and deepen our ties with Shenzhen.

Captain Fareh Mazputra, Managing Director of AirAsia Malaysia, also celebrated the launch, noting that AirAsia is the largest foreign low-cost carrier in China. He added that the airline is

…. thrilled to introduce this new route to China from Penang, our third-largest hub in Malaysia. It’s exciting to welcome guests on this inaugural flight from Penang, a city known for its rich culture and delicious local food. ……. We believe we can attract more Chinese tourists, especially with the government’s visa-free initiative for up to 15 days, valid until the end of next year.

With this direct flight, Penang aims to strengthen its role as a key destination for cultural exchange and tourism, boosting economic ties and promoting religious tourism while positioning itself as a gateway to Southeast Asia.
