AirAsia Runway Ready Designer Search 2017 is the third edition of this popular design event and the Malaysian finalists were announced at an event in Kuala Lumpur recently.
Designer Search 2017 – the competition
AirAsia is the Preferred Travel Partner for the KL Fashion Week Ready to Wear 2017 (KLFW RTW 2017) and is the sponsor of the Designer Search covering the ten ASEAN countries. Apart from flying in established designers from India, Japan, China, South Korea and Australia who will showcase their latest collections on the KLFW RTW runway, they will give an opportunity to aspiring young designers to take the next step up.
The Designer Search 2017 team will now travel round other Asean countries to identify their top two designers to battle for the top honour during the Grand Finale in Kuala Lumpur this August.

The judging
Aspiring Malaysia designers went through extensive rounds of judging before the winners were selected based on
- design creativity,
- originality,
- consistency of their collection,
- adherence to the Asean theme,
- practicality and
- stage presentation potential.
These criteria will also be used at the regional auditions in all the capital cities throughout all Asean countries. Two finalists from each country will be selected to travel to Kuala Lumpur for the Grand Finale this August.
The judges:
The panel of judges for the Malaysian audition included Aireen Omar, CEO of AirAsia; Andrew Tan, Founder of KL Fashion Week Ready to Wear; Vivy Yusof, Co-Founder of FashionValet, Alia Bastamam, Fashion Designer and Yang Mei Ling, Editor of FEMALE Malaysia Magazine.
The Kuala Lumpur Finalists
The two finalists selected to represent Malaysia are twenty-six year old Andrew Low and Phynix Tan Pek Han aged twenty-two.
The Grand Prize
Up for grabs in August will be a Grand Prize of
- 150,000 AirAsia BIG Points
- RM25,000 fund to produce a capsule collection to be sold on fashionvalet.com
- a six-page fashion spread in AirAsia’s in-flight magazine, Travel3Sixty
- AirAsia flights and mentorship from the KLFW RTW, and
- a confirmed slot to showcase their full collection in KL Fashion Week RTW 2018
