AirAsia is an Official Supporter of the AFF Suzuki Cup 2018, ASEAN’s top football competition. Thailand was the champion in 2016 and will defend their title in Indonesia in November 2018.
AFF Suzuki Cup 2018 – Format
The 12th competition since the tournament began in 1996, will be held in Bogor and Bekasi in Indonesia and Kallang in Singapore. Play dates are between 8th November and 15th December 2018.
Organisers have made some changes to the format to bring more excitement to the competition.
These changes are:
- Nine teams will gain automatic qualification.
- Thailand (2016 holders),
- Vietnam,
- Indonesia,
- Malaysia,
- Philippines,
- Myanmar,
- Singapore,
- Cambodia
- Laos.
- The tenth spot goes to the winner of qualifying play-offs between Brunei and Timor Leste in September.
- Australia has been a member since 2013 but will not participate.
- The first round will see the ten qualifiers play in 5 teams in two groups. The draw was held in Jakarta on 2nd May.
Each team plays two matches at home and two matches away.
As the new format encourages more fan engagement through the home and away format, AirAsia’s sponsorship is timely.
