Oil prices have been rising steadily over the past year, with an escalation in jet fuel price rises in the past few months to exceed US$120 per barrel. As a result, AirAsia Malaysia (flight code AK) has reintroduced fuel surcharges beginning 8th March 2022 for all their domestic and international flights. The fuel surcharges will be applicable for new flight bookings made on and after 8th March 2022. All bookings made prior to 8th March 2022 will not be affected.

Fuel surcharges come and go

The airline hopes these surcharges will only temporary and AirAsia has twice removed fuel surcharges as jet fuel prices dropped. Fuel surcharges were introduced in 2005 and abolished in 2008, and later reintroduced  in 2011. In 2015 the jet fuel price hit a high of US$78 per barrel but AirAsia removed the fuel surcharge as soon as the price dropped to around US$48 per barrel during the year. Since then, AirAsia has absorbed any oil price increases and fuel surcharges had not resumed, despite other carriers adjusting fares and increasing fuel and admin charges as early as 2018.

…. Airlines the world over are affected by the rising oil prices and the continuous upward spiral caused by the situation in Eastern Europe and other external factors have made it imperative for us to reintroduce the fuel surcharge, despite our best efforts to resist it for as long as we could. AirAsia Malaysia CEO Riad Asmat

He added that AirAsia hopes this will only be a temporary measure and that the airline will continue to ensure fares remain as low as possible despite the fuel surcharge.

….. We will continue to monitor the situation and at the same time capitalise on technological and digital innovations as ways to keep costs at bay and make air travel affordable for everyone.
