Although travellers with nothing to declare could collect their luggage and head through the Green Lane at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) for many years, this facility was removed some years ago. However, the Green Lane has been reinstated at Terminal One (T1) for international passengers, as part of an initiative to improve arrival flow and reduce congestion, particularly at baggage claim areas.
Speaking at the launch, Loke Siew Fook, Minister of Transport, has assured travellers that this measure will not only improve the smooth movement of passengers, and carried out without compromising national security as officers can still conduct random checks where necessary.
How the Green Lane Process Works
- Two Green Lanes are available for passengers with no items to declare
- This allows travellers to proceed directly to the Arrivals Hall without having to go through lengthy baggage X-ray screening.
- One Red Lane is still available for passengers carrying items that must be declared and require customs/duty checks.
This initiative has been implemented following close collaboration between Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad (MAHB), the Royal Malaysian Customs Department and the Border Control Enforcement Agency (AKPS).
The Green Lane is currently being implemented as a pilot project for a month until 26th February to assess its effectiveness, following which an appropriate SOP will be finalised. If successful, the concept will be expanded to Terminal 2 and other international airports including those in Penang, Kota Kinabalu and Johor Bahru. This initiative is in line with efforts to enhance the tourist experience in conjunction with Visit Malaysia 2026 and aims to increase the flow of passengers more efficiently at the country’s international gateways.
