KLIA T1 cuts security check to one at departure gate

March 11, 20262 minute read

Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) Terminal 1 have cut their security check procedure to a single check at the departure gate conducted by the Royal Malaysian Customs Department (RMC). This check has always been in place, but all passengers were previously required to undergo additional  checks at a station just after passing through Immigration. This was a cause of congestion during peak travel times, leading to delays. This was particularly inconvenient for passengers leaving from the Satellite building. From 1st Jan 2026, these two screenings will be combined, with only one screening at the departure gate.

It is important to note that this check also follows the ‘NO liquids aerosols or gels’ rule, and once you are in the Boarding lounge, there are no water fountains or toilets. Despite this, we note that there has been a noticeable improvement of passenger flow at KLIA Terminal 1 through this relocation of customs inspection at the Departure Gate as most Gates have two inspection belts and if the adjoining gate is not being used, these will be used as well.

A Ministry of Transport Press Statement issued to announce the implementation of the changes

…. These improvements are implemented through close collaboration between MOT, Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad (MAHB), JKDM and the Malaysian Border Control and Protection Agency (AKPS). This measure does not affect the level of security or customs enforcement. Instead, passenger and cargo inspections will continue to be strengthened through operational coordination and compliance with mutually agreed procedures. Any attempt to bring out goods that violate the law will still be subject to strict action.

They also added that the improvements were expected to improve the passenger experience, speed up the boarding process and ensure that KLIA Terminal 1 operations run more efficiently, safely and orderly, in line with best practices at international airports.
