Poh Ling Yeow’s Nyonya Chicken Curry a big Hit!

March 31, 20153 minute read

After only three months, Malaysia Airlines’ hot new signature dish of Nyonya Chicken Curry, served with a roti-style croissant on outbound flights to Kuala Lumpur has been chosen by more than 134,000 passengers. The dish was offered for three months in conjunction with bestselling author and MasterChef favourite Poh Ling Yeow, who spent the first nine years of her life growing up in Kuala Lumpur and counts the dish as one of her family favourites.

Apart from the ever popular, award winning satay offered by the airline, Malaysia Airlines’ Executive Chef Zahiddin Dris commented that the dish is perhaps one of the best inflight meals Malaysia Airlines has ever had because like satay, it is simple and authentic.

He said “Poh’s flavoursome chicken curry has been one of the most popular items on the menu since its launch and the feedback has been extremely positive with both Malaysians and antipodeans noting it’s the Malay real deal. We’re delighted with this fantastic result.”

The dish lends itself well to airline catering, which Chef Zahiddin Dris says is not easy, leading him to look constantly for new ideas to improve the airline’s menus.

He adds “Menu planning sky high is very complex. We lose about 15 to 20 per cent of our taste at 50,000 feet and antipodeans are also very particular. They like to try unique cultural items but they do not like food which is too spicy unlike their neighbours in Asia so creating a winning dish is not easy. Poh’s Nyonya Chicken Curry is appealing because it’s a simple home style favourite with a difference.”

In her own comments, Poh Ling offered “The Malaysia Airlines collaboration is a very exciting partnership for me. I’ve always been impressed with how much pride they take in providing high quality cuisine – so for my dish to take off in such a big way is pretty special. I’m already dreaming up my next idea for the airline,” she said.

Regional Senior Vice President of Malaysia Airlines, Mr PK Lee, said that following great success of this collaboration with Poh, Malaysia Airlines hopes to be able to collaborate with Poh on more projects in the future.

He says “We’re thrilled Poh’s dish has been such a hit with passengers. Our Malaysian heritage places great importance on cuisine and developing high calibre dishes helps shape memorable journeys for our guests so we’re delighted Poh’s dish has been tickling our passengers’ taste buds,” Mr Lee said.

To follow Poh’s adventures on a trip to Malaysia, you can view her five part journey on the Malaysia Airlines’ YouTube channel, and perhaps decide to book yourself a trip to this exciting destination.
