From 14th December 2025, AirAsia Malaysia will operate three direct flights weekly between Johor Bahru and the Capital of Yunnan Province, Kunming, complementing the airline’s 14 weekly flights from Kuala Lumpur to Kunming and strengthening its domestic hubs beyond Kuala Lumpur. The new service enlarges AirAsia’s presence in the China market and makes it easier for travellers from Johor and neighbouring Singapore to fly direct to Kunming. It also underscores the airline’s strategic focus to elevate Johor Bahru as a key southern hub, complementing its main base in Kuala Lumpur and boosting connectivity from other emerging gateways across Malaysia.  As the only low-cost carrier (LCC) in Malaysia to operate commercial flights for the Johor Bahru-Kunming route, AirAsia maintains its dominance in affordable air connectivity between Malaysia and China and reinforces its position as a leading LCC connecting the two countries. The new service opens fresh opportunities for trade, tourism and cultural exchange between Johor and the Yunnan province.

Yunnan is home to the Honghe Hani Rice Terraces, a UNESCO World Heritage site located in southern Yunnan, most famously, Yuanyang County. With a day flight you see these as you fly in to Kunming from the South. These spectacular terraces, some of which are over 1,200 years old, make a spectacular display that you really can’t ignore.  Travellers from Johor Bahru can now experience Kunming’s rich culture, scenic landscapes and mild climate more easily and visitors from China gain convenient access to southern Peninsular Malaysia, the cities, natural attractions and cross-border leisure experiences. This new service is another step forward in AirAsia’s network growth, strengthening Malaysia’s position as a regional aviation hub.

Promotional Fares on offer

To commemorate the launch of the new route, AirAsia has special promotional fares on offer for flights from Johor Bahru to Kunming starting from RM469* all-in, one-way and from Kunming to Johor Bahru starting from CNY678* all-in one way. All flights are available for booking on the AirAsia MOVE app and airasia.com, until 23rd November 2025, for travel between 14th December 2025 to 28th March 2026. *All-in fares are quoted for one-way travel only, including passenger service charge, regulatory service charges, fuel surcharges, and other applicable fees. Terms and conditions apply.
