Travellers heading between Australia and Europe will have a new full service option from early 2027, with British Airways announcing the launch of a daily London to Melbourne service operating via Kuala Lumpur. The inaugural flight on this new route begins on 9th January 2027, marking a significant step in expanding long haul travel options through Kuala Lumpur International Airport. The airline will operate the flights using its Boeing 787 fleet, offering four cabins that include First, Club World, World Traveller Plus and World Traveller. For Australian travellers this means the return of a familiar full service carrier on the ever popular Kangaroo Route. The stop in Kuala Lumpur also creates an alternative to the traditional hubs used for Europe bound travel from Melbourne.

British Airways brings a long legacy to the route. The airline traces its heritage to Aircraft Transport and Travel Limited which commenced the world’s first scheduled international passenger service in 1919. That same year saw two other carriers take to the skies and all three are still in business today. British Airways later became a founding member of the Oneworld Alliance which gives travellers access to an extensive global network and reciprocal benefits.
The decision to route the flights through Kuala Lumpur strengthens the airport’s position as a key transit point linking Europe, Southeast Asia and Australia. Malaysia Airports Managing Director Mohd Izani Ghani noted that the move reflects strong confidence in the airport. He said the service enhances connectivity across Europe, Southeast Asia and Australia and reinforces Kuala Lumpur’s role as an efficient transit hub for long haul travel. He added that it demonstrates KLIA’s resilience and growth potential at a time when the aviation sector continues to navigate global uncertainties.
Southbound services will depart London Heathrow in the evening and arrive in Kuala Lumpur the following afternoon. Travellers will continue to Melbourne in the evening with arrival the next morning. Northbound flights will leave Melbourne in the late afternoon, arriving in Kuala Lumpur in the evening before continuing overnight to London.
For Melbourne based travellers seeking a full service alternative to reach London, or for those looking to break the journey with a city stop in Malaysia, the new British Airways service offers a welcome addition. It also marks the return of an airline with more than a century of aviation history to one of Australia’s busiest international gateways.

British Airways highlighted the importance of the move as part of its broader network plans for the northern winter of 2026. Chief Planning and Strategy Officer Neil Chernoff said the airline is delighted to announce significant growth in its flying schedule. He said the new route will enhance connectivity for travellers moving between Malaysia and Australia and will be popular with both leisure and business travellers. Chernoff also said the expansion reaffirms the airline’s commitment to the Asia Pacific region.
For travellers passing through Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia Airports says KLIA is ready for the additional traffic. The airport continues to focus on operational efficiency, smooth passenger processing and ongoing improvements to terminal facilities. These enhancements aim to ensure a reliable and comfortable journey for passengers connecting between the two long haul sectors.
The new service also brings added freight capacity between the United Kingdom, Malaysia and Australia which is expected to support trade links. With Visit Malaysia 2026 approaching, the increased connectivity is expected to further support the growth of tourism and aviation activity in the region.
