With the inaugural flight of their latest Indonesian service Kuala Lumpur to Semarang, AirAsia Malaysia (AK) has cemented its position as the largest foreign low-cost carrier (LCC) with the widest international network into Indonesia.
Semarang’s Jenderal Ahmad Yani Airport has recently regained its status as an international airport and this new route connects Malaysia with Central Java’s capital city, adding to AirAsia’s destinations across Indonesia. This new service offers travellers greater access to Central Java’s cultural landmarks, business hubs, and emerging economic zones. It also opens opportunities to enhance bilateral trade and investment opportunities and contributes to Indonesia’s target of attracting up to 16 million foreign tourists in 2025.
Ahmad Luthfi, the Governor of Central Java noted that the reinstatement of international status for Jenderal Ahmad Yani Airport reinstated brings the number of international airports in Indonesia to thirty six. He looks forward to this new route between Kuala Lumpur and Semarang will strengthen tourism flows, business activity, and investment into Central Java.
Malaysia’s Director General of Tourism Manoharan Periasamy is equally upbeat.
…. The launch of direct flights from Semarang to Kuala Lumpur significantly strengthened accessibility for travellers from Central Java. This enhanced connectivity not only makes it easier for Indonesian travellers to experience Malaysia’s rich cultural and leisure offerings but also supports our preparations for Visit Malaysia 2026.
Captain Fareh Mazputra, AirAsia Malaysia CEO noted that Indonesia is AirAsia Malaysia’s single largest international market and added that the airline’s entry into Semarang reflects the commitment to growing secondary cities, as well as major hubs, providing affordable, convenient and direct access for travellers.
AirAsia Malaysia (AK) currently operates flights to 17 destinations in Indonesia, including Jakarta, Bali (Denpasar), Medan, Yogyakarta, Banda Aceh, Makassar, Padang, Pekanbaru, Balikpapan, Labuan Bajo, Lombok, Palembang and Semarang, with flights to Pontianak commencing on 12th September 2025. The airline also connects Kuching to Pontianak and Penang to Jakarta and Medan.
