Since making its first flight as a oneworld member on 1st February 2013 from Kuala Lumpur to Melbourne, Malaysia Airlines has set up codesharing partnerships with ten of its fellow oneworld members. Today, 17th September 2025, fellow oneworld alliance members Malaysia Airlines and Qantas have announced a new codeshare partnership offering travellers improved connectivity, benefits, and a seamless travel experience between Australia and Malaysia, and beyond.
Benefits for travellers
This collaboration and the addition of the ‘MH’ code, will allow Malaysia Airlines ticketholders to transfer smoothly on to 18 Qantas-operated domestic routes across Australia from key international gateways to cities like Canberra, Darwin, Hobart, and Launceston.
For their part, Qantas will place its ‘QF’ code on Malaysia Airlines flights between Kuala Lumpur and major Australian cities, Adelaide, Brisbane, Melbourne, Perth, and Sydney as well as to Singapore. You will also see the QF code appearing on flights to popular Malaysian destinations including Kota Kinabalu, Kuching, Langkawi, and Penang.
The collaboration is timely, as Malaysia Airlines prepares for a significant expansion in the Australian market later this year. The airline resumes services to Brisbane on 29th November 2025, with five weekly flights and increased services to Melbourne and Sydney to three flights daily from 30th October and 31st October 2025 respectively. Perth and Adelaide will also see enhanced frequencies, with Perth increasing from 12 to 14 weekly flights from 1st December 2025, and Adelaide rising from five to seven weekly flights from 1st February 2026.
This represents a substantial boost in capacity and reaffirm Malaysia Airlines’ long-term commitment to the region. Malaysia Aviation Group (MAG) Group MD, Captain Izham Ismail, confirmed during the recent MATTA Fair, that the airline will use their newly acquired A330neo aircraft on these routes.
With reference to the Codesharing agreement, Captain Izhan was upbeat, noting that the partnership with Qantas marks an important step forward as Malaysia Airlines strengthens its presence in Australia, a key market .
…. Australia has long been a core part of our network, and our recent investments – including the deployment of the A330neo, increase in flight frequencies, and the resumption of services to Brisbane – reflect our commitment to meeting growing demand while enhancing our premium offering in this market.
Cam Wallace, CEO Qantas International was equally enthusiastic, perhaps looking forward to, as he suggested, hiking in Borneo, or a beach escape to Langkawi.
…. As one of our oneworld partners in Asia, we’re pleased to deepen our relationship with Malaysia Airlines, making it easier for Qantas customers to travel to Malaysia while enjoying frequent flyer rewards and premium service.
