Starting 8th January, 2025, Malaysians travelling to or transiting through the United Kingdom will need to obtain an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA). This new UK ETA requirement aims to simplify entry for short-term visitors.
The ETA is a digital travel permission for those who do not need a visa for short stays or who do not already hold UK immigration status and will cost £10 (approximately RM56.69). Once approved, it allows multiple entries into the UK for stays of up to six months over a period of two years, or until the holder’s passport expires, whichever comes first.
The introduction of this requirement aligns with similar measures in other countries, such as the US and Australia, to enhance border security. The UK receives millions of visitors each year for tourism, study, and business, and this new system aims to create a more efficient and secure immigration process.
Getting your UK ETA
The ETA will be gradually rolled out to various countries, starting from November 2023. You can check the timeline on this page. It is important to note that the ETA is not a visa so visitors planning to stay in the UK for more than six months, such as for work or study, will still need to apply for the appropriate visa. Additionally, those with a valid UK visa are exempt from requiring an ETA.
Malaysian travellers can begin applying starting 27th November, 2024, via the ‘UK ETA app’ or on the official GOV.UK website. The application process is designed to be quick and straightforward, with most applicants receiving a decision within three working days, and potentially even faster through the app.
All applications will be handled directly by UK Visas & Immigration. The British High Commission in Kuala Lumpur has clarified that they will not be involved in the application and approval process.
