Two cool breakfast places in Perlis to enjoy the view

Perlis is Malaysia’s northern-most state and also its smallest. The state is mostly rural, with many small kampungs (villages) dotted in and among the many padi fields. So one of the nicest places to have breakfast, is to either have a view of the fields as you eat, or on the way. We recently visited Perlis with our friends at Gaya Travel and were introduced to two such breakfast places in Perlis which had good food and were picturesque as well.

Our first stop was just north of Kangar, in a small village, Kampung Kechor. It was a Thursday morning, but the place was quite full. This is always an indicator of good food in Malaysia.

Apart from the familiar local coffee, which was good, hot or cold, we tried a variety of old favourites like nasi lemak, roti jala and pulut udang and some new ones as well. The koay teow seller told us he’d worked in Penang and learnt his skill there, which is why he was able to get ‘wok hei’ which translates as ‘breath of the wok’ and definitely gives the flavour a lift. We had a plate of koay teow with a side of barbequed lamb fillets (kambing) which was cooking behind him. The dish was filling and tasty and definitely a cut above others that come without the ‘life’ (or the kambing).

Sarang burung is a piece of roti canai with an extra ring added to make a nest, hence the name, which means ‘birds nest’. The nest contains eggs, with a side of meat, usually beef. Lontong is a popular Indonesian dish of compressed rice, served with sauce and other condiments. We also enjoyed a flat pancake with coconut, dipped in curry.

Although you don’t actually get to admire the view from your table, the drive in and out certainly makes up for this, especially when the padi is at the irrigation stage. The reflections in the water make the scenery extra beautiful, especially in the early morning.

When we visited on a Friday morning, we could see that Nipah Klasik is a popular place for families as Friday is part of their weekend.  And there’s plenty to see. The restaurant is actually built into the growing Nipah palms fringing the padi fields and part of it stands on stilts in the water. As you walk in you travel through wooden pathways where little nooks welcome you to enjoy your meal there and then. Cat lovers will be happy to be welcomed by a number of friendly felines, though they don’t seem to want to steal your food.

We were presented with an array of dishes on offer, mostly nasi lemak, which was available with fried chicken or chicken, octopus or prawns in the sambal. It was also available as nasi lemak pulut, where glutinous rice was cooked with santan instead of normal rice. Fried noodles and lontong were also laid out for us.

The food was good, although most people seemed to spend more time watching the fish below, or discovering the little well (with a bucket and string) and learning about the fruit of the nipah palms and how the leaves are used to make traditional attap roofs for kampung houses, not so common nowadays.
