Qantas is set to return to Beijing, with daily flights out of Sydney starting from 25th January 2017, subject to government and regulatory approvals. The daily flights between Sydney and Beijing are conveniently timed to draw from existing connections within Qantas’  extensive domestic and trans-Tasman network.

The new service resumes the Sydney – Beijing connection which has been idle since 2009, amid renewed and growing interest in both tourism and trade related travel. The flights into Beijing Capital International Airport will use an Airbus A330-200 aircraft, raising the carrier’s destinations in China to three. Qantas operates daily return services to Shanghai and offers twenty-eight weekly return services to Hong Kong.

Qantas Group Chief Executive Alan Joyce spoke enthusiastically about the potential for the new connection, which is expected to build on strong loads on the existing Shanghai and Hong Kong services. Apart from working with Tourism Australia on marketing campaigns in China, he says there will be a focus on business travel, given the strengthening trade ties between the two countries.

The new Beijing-Sydney service, which will codeshare with China Eastern extends Qantas’ joint venture partnership with China Eastern, offering three international codeshare routes between Australia and China under their strengthened agreement, comprising Sydney-Hangzhou, Sydney-Kunming and Brisbane-Shanghai.

Tickets are expected to go on sale in the next few days – by mid to late October 2016.
