The Malaysian Department of Civil Aviation reports that work is on schedule for a May 2 opening for KLIA2. The commitment was reiterated while giving a presentation on “Malaysia’s New Air Traffic Management System” at a Malaysia Industrial Development Finance luncheon talk.
Additional remedial works are taking place in order to convince fire crews of the building’s safety, while Operational Readiness and Airport Transfer (ORAT) tests take place concurrently. These tests are being conducted in stages so as to improve the likelihood that all tests will be completed on time.
DCA director general Datuk Azharuddin Abdul Rahman did concede that there will be some repetition as a result. “We will do it part by part. Any part that’s ready, we’ll go in and inspect. It’s very difficult to say how many percent of the checks are done because sometimes we have to do it twice; sometimes we have to do preliminary checks and then check again,” he said.
Nevertheless, the commitment to the May 2 opening date is impressive. We continue to await developments related to airlines operating from this terminal, however it is expected that full-service airlines will be interested in operating from this terminal rather than from KLIA.
“The priority now is for budget airlines,” Deputy Minister of Transport Datuk Abdul Aziz Kaprawi said, without revealing any more.
It will be interesting to see whether this priority extends to convincing Malindo and Jetstar Asia to move to KLIA2, as they currently operate from KLIA rather than the LCCT, destined to be demolished in the wake of KLIA2’s opening.
