April 16, 20153 minute read

AirAsia and UnionPay International have recently signed a strategic partnership agreement which will
UnionPay bank cardholders the convenience of easier payment for flights, hotels and related transactions.

Customers from China will now be able to book AirAsia flights in RMB using their UnionPay cards. In addition, Tune Money, AirAsia’s pre-paid card partner will collaborate with UnionPay to issue a multi-currency prepaid card, available in Chinese Yuan (CNY), Thai Bahts (THB) and Hong Kong Dollars (HKD). UnionPay plans to create exclusive online offers for cardholders through its China based merchants.

UnionPay International (UPI) is a subsidiary of China UnionPay, focused on the growth and support of UnionPay’s global business and has partnerships with more than 300 institutions worldwide.

In a statement released in conjunction with the signing in Shanghai on 15th April 2015, the companies confirmed that “With this partnership, UnionPay will also support AirAsia’s BIG Loyalty Programme with auto points conversion targeted for the fourth quarter of this year. The AirAsia BIG Loyalty Programme enables BIG Shots to earn BIG Points via all companies under the Tune Group such as AirAsia, Tune Hotels and Tune Talk in addition to over 100 BIG Loyalty Partners across the region. Members will be able to get BIG points for every UnionPay transaction and redeem points for AirAsia flights. BIG and UnionPay are also planning to issue a cobrand card targeted for the third quarter of this year.”

The biggest benefits for UnionPay customers will likely be the opportunity to transact in their own currency and also collect BIG points for use towards future travel.

In the 10 years since AirAsia first flew into China, AirAsia has expanded to operating 34 routes to over 16 destinations in Greater China, with 352 weekly frequencies.  As Tony Fernandes, Group CEO of AirAsia commented, the fact that 80% of the more than 20 million Chinese passengers carried since then were taking their first flight ever, is evidence of the opportunity that AirAsia has given to Chinese travellers to travel overseas. China is an important and expanding market and he also flagged further expansion in China with greater flight frequency.
